Frequently Asked Questions

What is the therapy process?

Great question! The process goes like this:

1) Free Consultation: I offer free 20-30 minute consultations over video or phone. This helps us mutually determine if we will be a good fit together based on your goals and desires for therapy and type of therapist you are looking for. I’ll ask you some questions, you can ask me questions, and then we can either book our first session or you can take as much time as you need to think about it. If you decide you want to move forward, then you will…

2) Fill Out Intake Paperwork (online): This helps me get to know you & what you want to work on in a more detailed way, and helps me prepare for our first session together.

3) Initial Intake Session: A fancy way of saying “the first session” — I will ask you lots of questions to help me gather information and get to know you better. The beginning of therapy is called the “assessment phase” and it will continue for a few sessions, but in general, the very first session tends to be a waterfall of questions.

4) Therapy: Now comes the fun part… the actual therapy! There are 3 main phases of therapy that we will move through together: Assessment, Goals, and Interventions.

  • Assessment: We will spend time assessing the situation/issues that you have brought to therapy. Essentially, we are going to get to the root of the question, “What brings you to therapy?”

  • Goals: In my therapy practice, establishing a goal is much deeper than what society typically demonstrates. I am interested in helping clients who want to experience meaningful, powerful, and transformative change. The goal that you establish will have ripple effects on your entire life, not just one pinpointed area.

  • Interventions: Once a goal has been established and you feel connected to this goal, we begin the intervention phase of therapy. Think of this as the action phase; the “how do I actually achieve this goal?” phase. Please know in advance: I do not operate with the typical set of tools and interventions that you will find in traditional therapy models such as CBT and DBT. I would rather help you discover interventions and tools that work specifically for you. You are unique, and you know your life better than anyone else. I am simply here to help you uncover the strength, knowledge, and courage that already exists within you.

What frequency of therapy do you recommend?

We will meet at a regular cadence, usually weekly or bi-weekly. I usually recommend starting with weekly sessions, if possible. This helps us gain insights quickly and keep up the momentum. We may eventually drop down to bi-weekly or monthly check-ins.

At some point, I hope that you will feel that you have met your goal and are ready to go off on your own. This is great news! I will hold space for us to have closure by integrating all of your growth and the experience we have shared together. My goal is to help you “graduate therapy,” but please know my door is always open for you to come back if you need to.

How long does therapy take?

There is no one-size-fits all answer, but here are some of my thoughts:

  • Typically, within 1-2 sessions, you can expect to feel some immediate relief, simply by getting some thoughts and feelings off your chest.

  • After 5-10 sessions you may start noticing changes in your life, which will probably motivate you to continue.

  • After 6-12 months of consistency and genuine effort, you can expect to experience deep change within your life and your relationships.

The outlined timeframe is going to be specific to you, your needs, and your effort – but this is a general pattern that I have witnessed. I also believe there is great value in seeing different therapists during different seasons of your life, and only you can sense when it is time to make that change.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you are unable to attend a session, please make sure you cancel or reschedule in advance via text or email. You will be charged a late-cancellation fee of 50% ($75) for any no-shows or cancellations that occur within the same day as the appointment.

What is the “Good Faith Estimate”?

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. You can also ask your healthcare provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
